What Are Blond Psyllium Seeds?

Blond psyllium (Plantago ovata) is a small annual plant of the plantain family native to western Asia and the Mediterranean. Most of the world’s supply grows in Gujarat and Rajasthan in India, where the seeds are known as isabgol, from the Persian words for horse ear, after their shape. In English they are also called ispaghula.

The plant produces small, pinkish-beige, boat-shaped seeds. Each seed is covered by a thin outer layer, the husk, which is very rich in soluble fiber. When the seeds or husks are mixed with water, this fiber swells and forms a smooth, clear gel.

That gel-forming ability makes psyllium a useful kitchen ingredient. In gluten-free and low-carb baking, psyllium acts as a binder and gives bread and wraps a flexible, bread-like texture. Whole seeds can also be soaked and added to smoothies, oatmeal, overnight oats and yogurt, or ground at home to make your own psyllium powder.

Psyllium must always be taken with plenty of liquid, as it swells considerably. In baking, the dough will look wetter at first and firm up as the psyllium absorbs water.

Our blond psyllium seeds are whole Plantago ovata seeds with nothing added. They are sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.

How to Use Blond Psyllium Seeds

  • Soaked seeds: Stir 1 teaspoon (about 4 g) into a large glass (8 fl oz / 250 ml or more) of water or juice, let it swell for a few minutes and drink right away, followed by another glass of water.
  • Breakfast: Soak 1 teaspoon in milk or yogurt overnight with oats and fruit.
  • Gluten-free baking: Grind the seeds and use 1 to 2 tablespoons per loaf as a binder in gluten-free or low-carb bread.

Safety

Always take with at least 8 fl oz (250 ml) of water or other liquid and drink more water afterwards. Not taking enough liquid can cause choking or blockage. Do not use if you have difficulty swallowing or a narrowing of the digestive tract. Take medication at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after psyllium. Avoid if allergic to psyllium. Keep out of reach of children.
