What Is Cowslip Flower?

Cowslip (Primula veris) is a wild primrose that grows in sunny meadows, pastures and open woods across Europe and western Asia. In April and May it carries nodding clusters of small, deep yellow, bell-shaped flowers with orange spots inside, held on a single stem above a rosette of wrinkled leaves. The flowers have a faint, sweet honey and apricot scent.

The plant has many old names, including paigles and keys of heaven, and the species name veris means of spring. In English villages the flowers were gathered each spring to make cowslip wine and cowslip syrup, and they were used to decorate May Day garlands. Cowslip balls, made by tying many flower heads together, were a traditional spring toy for children.

Dried cowslip flowers are brewed into a light, delicate, floral tea, enjoyed alone or with other spring flowers. They are also used in homemade syrups and country wines, and the petals can be scattered over salads and desserts.

Wild cowslip is protected in some countries, so please only use cultivated or legally collected flowers such as ours, and enjoy wild plants where they grow.

Our cowslip flowers contain only dried Primula veris flowers with nothing added. They are sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.

How to Use Cowslip Flower

  • Flower tea: Use 1 to 2 teaspoons (about 1 to 2 g) of flowers per cup (8 fl oz / 250 ml). Pour over water just below boiling, cover and steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain.
  • Blends: Mix with linden, elderflower or lemon balm for a soft spring blend.
  • Syrup: Steep a handful of flowers in hot water overnight, strain and warm with an equal amount of sugar until dissolved.

Safety

Avoid if you are allergic to primroses or sensitive to aspirin. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare professional before use. Keep out of reach of children.
