What Is Corn Silk?

Corn silk is the long, shiny, thread-like strands that grow from the top of every ear of corn (Zea mays). Each strand is a style connected to a single kernel: it catches pollen so that the kernel can develop. In herbal trade, dried corn silk is known as Stigmata maydis or Maydis stigma.

The silks are collected when the corn is harvested, cleaned and dried. Dried corn silk is soft, golden to reddish-brown and has a light, sweet, grassy scent.

Corn silk tea is one of the most widely enjoyed traditional herbal teas in the world. In Korea it is called oksusu suyeom cha and is often sold bottled, and in China, Turkey and the Balkans it has been a household tea for generations. Native American peoples also used corn silk. It is often blended with roasted corn kernels for a nutty, toasty flavor.

Corn silk tea gives a light golden cup with a mild, naturally sweet and slightly grassy taste. It is pleasant hot or chilled, on its own or blended with mint, lemon or hibiscus.

Our corn silk contains only dried corn silk with nothing added. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.

How to Use Corn Silk

  • Corn silk tea: Use 1 to 2 tablespoons (about 2 to 3 g) per cup (8 fl oz / 250 ml). Pour over boiling water, cover and steep for 10 minutes, then strain.
  • Korean style: Simmer corn silk with a handful of roasted corn kernels for 10 to 15 minutes for a nutty, toasty tea.
  • Iced tea: Brew double strength, cool and serve over ice with lemon or mint.

Safety

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare professional before use. Keep out of reach of children.
