What Is Turmeric Root Powder?
Turmeric powder is made from the dried rhizome, or root, of turmeric (Curcuma longa), a tropical plant of the ginger family native to South and Southeast Asia. India grows most of the world’s turmeric, and it has been used there for thousands of years in cooking, ceremonies and dyeing.
Fresh turmeric looks a little like ginger, but inside it is a vivid orange. The roots are boiled, dried and ground into the familiar golden-yellow powder. Its bright color comes from natural pigments called curcuminoids, mainly curcumin.
Turmeric has a warm, earthy, slightly bitter and peppery flavor. It is the backbone of curry powders and Indian dals, curries and biryanis, and it colors and flavors yellow rice, soups, scrambled eggs and tofu, pickles, mustard and roasted vegetables. It is also the key ingredient of golden milk, a warm drink of milk, turmeric and spices.
Turmeric is a strong natural dye as well, used for fabric, Easter eggs and homemade play dough. In cooking, a pinch of black pepper and a little fat are traditionally added with turmeric.
Our turmeric root powder contains only ground turmeric root with nothing added. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.
