What Is Sycamore Bark?
Sycamore bark comes from the sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), a large maple tree native to central and southern Europe and western Asia. In Britain and much of Europe this tree is simply called the sycamore. It is not the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), which is a plane tree.
On young trees the bark is smooth and gray. As the tree ages, the bark breaks into small, flat plates that flake away, revealing pink-orange patches underneath. Our bark is wildcrafted from mature trees, then dried and cut.
Sycamore bark has a place in European folk tradition as a simple household bark tea. Because bark is dense, it is best prepared as a decoction: simmered gently in water rather than steeped. The result is an amber, woody and earthy tea with a slightly astringent finish.
Today sycamore bark is used by herbal tea collectors who enjoy tree teas, by herbalists who work with traditional European plants, and by makers who use bark in natural dyeing and crafts. It pairs well with our sycamore leaf, with birch or with warming spices.
Our sycamore bark contains only dried sycamore maple bark with nothing added. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.
How to Use Sycamore Bark
- Bark decoction: Simmer 1 to 2 teaspoons (about 3 to 5 g) of bark in 1 1/2 cups (12 fl oz / 350 ml) of water for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink warm.
- Tree tea blend: Mix with sycamore leaf, birch leaf or cinnamon for a woody blend.
- Natural dye: Simmer a larger amount of bark for an hour to make a soft brown dye bath for wool and cotton.
