What Is Neem Seed Powder?
Neem (Azadirachta indica) is a fast-growing evergreen tree of the mahogany family native to India and the Indian subcontinent and now grown throughout the tropics. In India it has been called the village pharmacy, because almost every part of the tree, leaves, bark, twigs, seeds and oil, has a place in daily life and tradition.
The tree produces small, olive-like fruits, each with one or two seeds. Neem seeds are the richest part of the tree in neem oil and its characteristic compounds, including azadirachtin. Ground into powder, they have a strong, bitter, garlic and sulfur-like scent that is typical of neem.
In Indian villages, neem seed powder and neem seed cake, what remains after pressing the oil, have traditionally been mixed into garden soil and compost as a natural soil amendment. Neem seed powder is also used in traditional hair packs and external preparations, usually mixed with other herbal powders.
