What Is Oolong Tea?
Oolong is one of the great families of tea, made from the leaves of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis), the same plant used for green, black and white tea. What makes oolong different is how it is processed: the leaves are withered, gently bruised and allowed to oxidize only partly before they are fired. This places oolong between green tea and black tea in flavor, color and character.
The name oolong comes from the Chinese wulong, meaning black dragon. Oolong teas come mainly from the Fujian and Guangdong provinces of China and from Taiwan, and they range from light, floral and green to dark, roasted and fruity.
Sapphire Garden Oolong is a loose leaf oolong with a smooth body, a floral aroma and gentle toasty notes. It brews a golden cup and is enjoyed plain, without milk or sugar, so its layered flavor can come through.
One of the joys of oolong is that the leaves can be steeped several times. Each infusion opens the leaves a little more and brings out new notes. Oolong is also excellent cold brewed for a smooth iced tea.
Our Sapphire Garden Oolong contains only loose leaf oolong tea. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.
