What Is Blue Vervain?

Blue vervain (Verbena hastata), also called swamp verbena or American vervain, is a tall perennial wildflower native to North America. It grows in wet meadows, marshes, ditches and along streams from southern Canada through most of the United States, and in midsummer carries slender, candelabra-like spikes of tiny violet-blue flowers.

Blue vervain is a close relative of European vervain (Verbena officinalis), a sacred plant in ancient Greek, Roman and Celtic traditions. Both have a long place in herbal history, and blue vervain was used by several Native American peoples and later by 19th century American herbalists.

The aerial parts, leaves, stems and flowers, are harvested when the plant is in bloom and dried. Blue vervain is known for its strong bitterness. As a tea it gives a green-gold cup with a very bitter, herbal taste, so it is usually brewed in small amounts, sweetened, or blended with milder herbs such as mint, lemon balm or chamomile.

Herbalists also use blue vervain to make tinctures and as an ingredient in traditional bitter blends. It is a favorite plant for pollinator gardens as well.

Our blue vervain contains only the dried herb with nothing added. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.

How to Use Blue Vervain Herb

  • Herbal tea: Use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (about 1 to 2 g) per cup (8 fl oz / 250 ml). Pour over boiling water, cover and steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. Add honey to taste.
  • Blends: Combine with mint, lemon balm or chamomile to soften the bitterness.
  • Tincture: Herbalists macerate the dried herb in alcohol for several weeks.

Safety
