What Are Oat Groats?

Oat groats are whole oat kernels (Avena sativa) with only the tough, inedible outer hull removed. They are the least processed form of oats: rolled oats, steel-cut oats and oat flour are all made from groats.

For small pets, oat groats are a natural, crunchy treat that most guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, rats, mice, chinchillas and degus love. Because they are whole kernels, they encourage natural chewing and foraging, and they are easy to hide in hay, toys or foraging mats.

Oat groats are rich in starch and energy, so they are best offered as an occasional treat, not as a main food. A guinea pig or rabbit’s diet should be based mainly on unlimited fresh hay, plus fresh greens and a small amount of good-quality pellets, with treats making up only a very small part.

Many owners use a few groats as a reward during handling and training, or offer them as an extra treat to pets that need a little more energy, on the advice of their vet. Rabbits and guinea pigs usually find the crunchy kernels irresistible.

Our oat groats contain only whole hulled oats with nothing added. They are sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.

How to Use Oat Groats for Guinea Pigs and Rabbits

  • Guinea pigs and rabbits: Offer a small pinch, about 5 to 10 groats, a few times a week as a treat.
  • Small rodents: Offer a few groats at a time as part of a varied diet.
  • Foraging fun: Scatter a few groats in hay, cardboard tubes or foraging toys.

Safety

Offer as an occasional treat only, in small amounts, alongside unlimited hay and fresh water. Introduce new foods slowly. If your pet has a health condition or is overweight, ask your vet before feeding. Keep the bag closed and stored away from pests.
