What Is Dandelion Root?
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is one of the most familiar wild plants on Earth: a hardy perennial of the daisy family with toothed leaves, bright yellow flowers and fluffy seed heads that children love to blow. Its name comes from the French dent de lion, lion’s tooth, after the shape of its leaves.
Below ground, dandelion grows a long, thick taproot that can reach deep into the soil. The roots are dug in spring or autumn, washed, cut and dried. In herbal trade the root is known as Taraxaci radix.
Dandelion root has a long history in European, Native American and Chinese traditions, and dandelion root tea is one of the classic herbal teas. Brewed from the dried root, it gives an amber cup with an earthy, slightly bitter and naturally sweet taste.
Dandelion root is also famous as a coffee alternative. When the dried root is roasted until dark brown and then ground, it brews a rich, toasty, coffee-like drink without caffeine. Roasting at home lets you choose how dark you like it.
Our dandelion root contains only dried, cut Taraxacum officinale root with nothing added. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.
