What Is Sycamore Leaf Tea?

Sycamore leaf tea is made from the dried leaves of the sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), a large maple tree native to Europe and western Asia. In the United Kingdom and much of Europe this tree is simply called the sycamore. It is a different tree from the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), which belongs to the plane tree family.

The leaves are large, five-lobed and maple-like. Our sycamore leaves are wildcrafted from mature trees, then dried and cut so they are ready to brew. In the cup they give a light amber tea with a mild, earthy and slightly woody taste.

Sycamore leaf has a place in European folk tradition as a simple household herbal tea. Today it is enjoyed by herbal tea collectors who like to explore tree leaf teas, and by people who make their own blends. It works well on its own or mixed with other leaves such as linden, birch or blackberry leaf.

The sycamore maple is one of the most familiar trees in European parks and mountain forests and can grow up to 100 feet (30 m) tall. Its winged seeds, the spinning helicopters that fall in autumn, are well known to children across Europe. Only the leaves are used for this tea.

Our sycamore leaf tea contains only dried sycamore maple leaves. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.

How to Use Sycamore Leaf Tea

  • Hot tea: Use 1 to 2 teaspoons (about 1.5 to 3 g) of dried leaves per cup (8 fl oz / 250 ml). Pour over boiling water, cover and steep for 7 to 10 minutes, then strain.
  • Stronger brew: For a fuller taste, steep for up to 15 minutes or use a little more leaf.
  • Herbal blends: Mix with linden flowers, birch leaf or mint for your own tree leaf blend.

Safety

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare professional before use. Keep out of reach of children.
