What Is Basil Powder?

Basil powder is made from the dried leaves of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum), the classic culinary basil of Italian and Mediterranean cooking. Basil is a member of the mint family and is native to tropical Asia, where it has been grown for thousands of years before spreading to the Mediterranean and the rest of the world.

The leaves are dried and finely ground into a green powder with a sweet, warm and peppery aroma and a light note of anise and clove. Compared with dried basil flakes, the powder blends evenly into liquids, doughs and spice mixes, with no visible leaf pieces.

Basil powder is ideal for tomato sauces, pizza and pasta sauces, minestrone and tomato soups, salad dressings, dips, marinades and Italian seasoning blends. It also works in breadcrumb coatings, focaccia and savory biscuits, flavored butter and oil, and even in sweet recipes with strawberries, peaches or lemon.

Ground basil has a concentrated flavor, so start with a small amount and add it toward the end of cooking to keep its aroma.

Our basil powder contains only ground sweet basil leaves with nothing added. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.

How to Use Basil Powder

  • Sauces and soups: Stir 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (about 0.5 to 1 g) into tomato sauce or soup during the last minutes of cooking.
  • Dressings and dips: Whisk a pinch into olive oil and vinegar dressing, yogurt dip or cream cheese.
  • Seasoning blends: Mix with oregano, thyme, garlic and black pepper for a homemade Italian seasoning.
