What Is Cacao Powder?
Cacao powder is made from the beans of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao), a small tropical tree native to the rainforests of Central and South America. The name Theobroma means food of the gods in Greek, a nod to the place cacao held in Maya and Aztec culture, where cacao drinks were served at ceremonies and the beans were even used as currency.
The cacao tree grows large pods directly on its trunk. Inside each pod are 30 to 50 beans surrounded by sweet white pulp. The beans are fermented, dried and then processed into nibs, cacao butter and powder. Our cacao powder is ground from cacao beans and has a deep, rich chocolate flavor with a pleasant natural bitterness.
Criollo is one of the three classic varieties of cacao, alongside Forastero and Trinitario. It is the rarest of the three and is valued for its fine, aromatic flavor.
Cacao powder is used for hot cacao and chocolate drinks, smoothies, baking, raw desserts, energy balls, homemade chocolate and spice rubs. Unlike sweetened cocoa mixes, it contains no added sugar, so you control the sweetness.
Our cacao powder contains only ground cacao beans with nothing added. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.
How to Use Cacao Powder

- Smoothies: Blend 1 tablespoon with banana, nut butter and milk.
- Baking: Use in brownies, cakes, cookies and energy balls in place of cocoa powder. Sift it first to avoid lumps.
