What Is Blue Mallow Herb?

Blue mallow, also called common mallow or high mallow (Malva sylvestris), is a tall biennial or perennial plant of the mallow family, the same family as hibiscus and marshmallow. It grows along roadsides, field edges and gardens across Europe, North Africa and western Asia, and blooms from June to October with showy pink-purple flowers striped with darker veins.

Our blue mallow herb is made from the dried leaves and stems of the plant. Mallow leaves are rich in mucilage, a natural plant substance that turns soft and slippery in water. This is what gives mallow tea its smooth, silky texture.

Mallow has been used for food and tea since ancient times. The Romans ate the young leaves as a vegetable, and mallow leaf tea has been a household drink in European folk tradition for centuries. The leaves give a mild, green and gently earthy cup.

Please note that the famous color-changing blue tea is made from mallow flowers, not from the leafy herb. Our blue mallow herb makes a green-gold tea.

Our blue mallow herb contains only dried Malva sylvestris with nothing added. It is sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.

How to Use Blue Mallow Herb

  • Hot tea: Use 1 to 2 teaspoons (about 1.5 to 3 g) per cup (8 fl oz / 250 ml). Pour over hot water, cover and steep for 10 minutes, then strain.
  • Cold infusion: Mallow releases its mucilage best in cool water. Soak 1 tablespoon in 2 cups of room-temperature water for 4 to 8 hours, then strain.
  • Blends: Combine with linden, chamomile, mint or mallow flowers.

Safety
