What Is Arnica Flower Glycerite?

Arnica flower glycerite is a liquid plant extract made by steeping dried arnica flowers in vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a thick, naturally sweet liquid made from plant oils that draws out many plant compounds, and glycerites are a popular alcohol-free choice for people who make their own natural body care.

Arnica (Arnica montana) is a mountain wildflower of the daisy family, with bright yellow-orange flower heads. It grows in alpine meadows across Europe, and has been part of European folk tradition for centuries, where it was used externally in rubs, compresses and ointments after long days of physical work.

Today arnica is one of the best-known botanicals in natural skin and body care. Our glycerite gives makers an easy, ready-to-use way to add arnica to homemade creams, lotions, gels, balms and massage blends, or to dilute in water for a cool compress. A glycerite mixes easily with water-based products such as gels and lotions.

Arnica is for external use only. It should not be swallowed and should only be applied to unbroken skin.

Our arnica glycerite contains arnica flowers and vegetable glycerin. It is sold by volume, from small sample bottles up.

How to Use Arnica Flower Glycerite

  • Creams and gels: Stir 1 teaspoon of glycerite into about 3.5 oz (100 ml) of unscented cream, lotion or aloe gel.
  • Compress: Add 1 teaspoon to a cup of cool water, soak a clean cloth and apply to unbroken skin.
  • Balms: Add a small amount to the water phase of homemade lotions and emulsions.

Safety

For external use only. Do not swallow. Apply only to unbroken skin and avoid the eyes, mouth and mucous membranes. Do not use if you are allergic to plants of the daisy family (Asteraceae). Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing, or on children, unless advised by a qualified healthcare professional. Stop use if irritation occurs. Keep out of reach of children.
