What Are Coltsfoot Leaves?
Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) is a low perennial plant of the daisy family that grows across Europe and Asia and has spread to North America. It flowers very early in spring with bright yellow, dandelion-like flower heads, and only after the flowers fade do the leaves appear.
The leaves are large, round to heart-shaped and slightly angled, resembling the print of a colt’s hoof, which gave the plant its name. Their upper side is green, while the underside is covered in dense, white, felt-like hairs. In the past these soft hairs were used as tinder and to stuff pillows.
Coltsfoot leaf, known in herbal trade as Farfarae folium, has a long history in European herbalism. However, coltsfoot naturally contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, compounds that can damage the liver, and today many health authorities advise against internal use. For that reason we offer coltsfoot leaves for botanical collections, herbal study and craft use, not for tea.
The dried leaves, with their striking two-tone color and soft texture, are also used in pressed plant art and botanical displays.
Our coltsfoot leaves contain only dried Tussilago farfara leaves with nothing added. They are sold by weight, from small packs to bulk.
